Ported over from the Criterion laserdisc, this is a somewhat disappointing track (given Cowie's excellent credentials.) It contains some good background/insight on Bergman's life, methods, and the film, but too often falls into the familiar commentary trap of simply describing what is happening onscreen.

Cowie again offers up another lackluster commentary. Most of the commentary is spent describing what is on the screen. Skip it.

This being one of the first commentaries for Criterion, it was somewhat difficult to know what Cowie was supposed to be doing in the first place. Still, it is not so bad as it may seem. He offers some of the great stories he'll tell a few times over, and if one compares him to the awful Marc Gervais from the MGM Bergman films, Cowie seems like a true genius.
