The cut favored by the director, Johnson, is significantly different, and superior, in my opinion. Johnson points out the various changes and additional footage added and what it replaced, or other scenes that were removed. Arad is mostly complimentary of this or that and sometimes resorts to narrating the on-screen action. Johnson asserts that in this version he wanted to illustrate the Matt Murdock lawyer side of the character as a defender of the small victims against powerful antagonists. They note how this version fleshes out more character beats for Favreau and adds in the subplot for Coolio, while the lack of a love scene unfleshes Elektra in this version a bit. The desire of the studio for more of the Elektra and Murdock pairing on screen was one of the factors contributing to the theatrical cut. Johnson notes out how some of the violence had to be curtailed for ratings concerns, and this version enjoys much more of the filmed fight sequences in their entirety. A few silent gaps but not many.
