I was fooled. Herzog immediately rips into Penn in the fashion you would expect him to in the hypothetical world of the film itself. Herzog walks out after about 12 minutes or something like that, and I was in stitches. A great track for about that long -- didn't finish it, because Penn and the woman producer who finishes the track with him are not nearly as amusing. Herzog was the most fascinating part of the film and this holds true for the commentary, as well. Fun stuff.

Having read the previous review I knew what to expect from this 'joke commentary' but it didn't detract from it's effect as Werner plays the part of his character in the movie so well during the 30 mins that he duels with Zak during this commentary.

I did get further through the film than the previous reviewer (tho not to the end), Zak goes through a plethora of participants who in turn become more hostile to him. I gave up when the Official Fox DVD Commentary editor was speaking.. the joke had worn far too thin by then.

Worth a cursory listen if only for Werner being in character.

The other two commentaries are far more informative (tho you have to find them yourself as they are Easter Eggs)

Penn and Herzog provide an informative track that goes more into the theme and intentions of the choices made in the film. They point out details and nuances that are not immediately apparent, and offer some interesting anecdotes about the shooting experience. There is some overlap and repetition of information from the third track below. Penn often mentions other features on the disc will go more in depth about certain elements.

Penn, his assistant, one of the actors are on board to provide a track that repeats some of the information from the serious track with Herzog. They point out the choices made on production, filming, lighting and props with the intent to maintain the spirit and tone of the film. This one is livelier than the Herzog track, with some self-deprecation - they give each other a hard time about making mundane comments and keep a running tally of short pauses throughout. Again, Penn et all hint at other features on the disc offering more details about various elements.
