The commentaries of the Warners Gangsters Box Set appears to be a weekend rush job starring most of the faculty of UCLA, or whoever was available. There's nothing illuminating in the comments of Eric Lax; only rarely are his comments screen-specific. He passes up every possible chance to fill me in on the composition or lighting, and misses no chance to blab endlessly about the stars and their bios. I wanted to scream: "Hey Doofus, I can read IMdB as well as you can -- tell me something I don't know!"

OK, decent commentary. Lax's track may not be particularly insightful but he does the usual "Film Historian" routine quite well. Like the above reviewer said, there's too much emphasis on biographical information, but all things considered the commentary is worth a listening.
