For the war scenes Jeunet used Word War I photos as references and drew upon his own experiences in the military while admitting that on a technical level he was inspired by Saving Private Ryan. Many of the shots of self-mutilation in the trenches were from the original source novel and a common occurrence during the war. This is a very informative track with Jeunet speaking constantly and candidly.

Excellent commentary! Jeunet starts by revealing that he would love to have access to a commentary like this when he was young, instead he had to find all the magazines and books for information. Well, he would'nt have been dissapointed with this. 2hours+ is a long time to listen to someone talking, but you never once lose interest, Jeunet voice is a constant travelling partner through this journey of his film, always interesting, often funny and sometimes even sad.

Favourite part: the many references he does to other films (which I had no idea of).
