You know, my granfather used to say "kids should be seen, not heard." It always struck me as unfair, especially from the standpoint of a kid. As this film so eloquently states, it's tough being a kid, or an adult. Which brings me to "The Kid" commentary track. Spencer Breslin, god bless him, is like the everything's okay alarm. For those who don't follow the Simpsons, imagine an ear-searing shriek emanating every ten seconds for 100 minutes. That's Spencer for the entire track. I tried to stick with it to the end. Just when the Director Turteltaub tries to embue the track with an interesting observance, here comes "the kid" with one question after another. I like commentaries that are informative, funny, or just soothing. You won't find much of those qualities in this commentary.
I will give Turteltaub another shot in the future. I have heard good reviews about his 'National Treasure' commentaries. After spending an afternoon with these two, one thing is for sure. This Director has more patience with kids than I ever will. In this light, "3 Ninjas" is a modern day Rashomon. Rating 3/10
