Wow, this is a rather boring affair. The two guys are French, and they’re not very outgoing. Luckily they do talk a lot, but it’s a rather subdued affair. They discuss the script (obviously) and how it was changed to accommodate to the various wishes of the higher-ups, budgetary constraingts, what-have-you. They added a lot of comedy to their original script, which itself was written in about ten days. The whole gangster thing was added later when they expanded the script to include more than just Andy Lau and Lau Ching-Wan. The necklace in the movie was inspired by the necklace in ‘Titanic’. One thing I really liked they had to change is that in the first drafts, Lau Ching-Wan was an obsessive cop only devoted to his work. I find what ended up in the movie much better. I’m not the only one thinking Andy Lau as a woman is a horrible idea. These 2 guys thought the same but the director imposed that idea on them. Some American company handled that make-up job. These two guys are ultimately very boring. The information they have is interesting but their delivery is absolutely lackluster. I always listen to the entire commentary tracks when I review them and I found it really hard to finish this one. These guys are lifeless and lack any kind of enthusiasm. You worked with Johnnie To guys! Be excited.
