Here's a funny thing, the DVD of the best sit-com of all time features quite possibly the worst commentary track of all time!
Presumably John Cleese didn't fancy it, and co-writer Connie Booth seems to have abandoned the business, so it falls to aging director John Howard Davies to fill in in their absence. A task he's clearly not up to as he struggles to find things to say almost from the start, and often falls silent altogether. And even when he is talking he manages to do so without really saying anything (e.g. - "I'm often asked why it's called FAWLTY TOWERS... I've absolutely no idea"), and this goes on for nearly 3 hours!!
Surely they could have roped in some of the other personnel from the series to help Davies out, and you almost feel sorry for him as he flounders around trying to think of something, anything, to say...
It was a trial sitting through it all, and I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone else to.
Oh, and the commentary for Series 2 (available separately or as part of a Box Set) - also a solo effort by that series's director Bob Spiers - is almost as painful/pointless...
