Is this the first time a filmmaker has referred to his bad commentary reviews? Possibly. And possibly Brad Bird actually heeded the advice of criticism and produced his best commentary to date. He does tone down the shout outs to his animators but states on the commentary he can't help himself and their fine work. It's also possible that the Cine-Explore mode of this Blu-Ray disc makes it slightly easier for him, the visual aspect constantly points out little cameos and details in the film that a DVD commentary would typically do. There are also featurettes in the mode, but that doesn't really apply here.
I liked how he referred to the 'old' Star Wars films and how well they introduced characters. He dances around the troubled history of the production and its original director, Jan Pinkava. He even points out the few problems I had with the film (such as Remy's ability to control Linguini) and how he tried to make those aspects work.
Oh and producer Brad Lewis gets a gig also. But it's Bird's commentary all the way. Just a shame it's only on the Blu-Ray.
