Longtime production partners, Clooney and Heslov give a very self-deprecating but also informative commentary as they point out the elaborate nature of some deceptively simple scenes and they reveal some tradecraft. They speak about the challenges of period filmmaking - costumes, sets, CGI, and using set pieces to hide contemporary elements. There is a startling amount of CGI in this film. Less technically, Clooney admits to be strongly influenced by some classic films in his construction of a few scenes. They often work with frequent collaborators from previous projects and point them out as they appear. Battling the elements: It was often cold, they planned for rain, and working with the mud on the field was an ordeal.
Some tidbits: this film was supposed to be made years earlier so they tweaked some dialogue to poke fun at the age of Clooney, they could not mention any NFL teams by name due to some content that made the NFL refuse to give clearances.
