Hallucinogenic. Hopper starts out giving great details about the film's production and his directorial style, but eventually veers off on a very Hopper-esque trip into Inner Space. The disc's making-of doc is also very comprehensive.

I don't remember this commentary being hallucinogenic. I remember it being deadly dull. Hugely disappointing given what I expected of Hopper.

Yes, there are frequent lulls on this track and Hopper tends to cover some of the same stories told in the retrospective documentary included on the DVD (i.e. how the film came together). He does put the movie into a historical context and offers the occasional decent observation.

I got the sense that Hopper had absolutely no recollection about the vast majority of this film. (Other than that the coke was real....) And, he doesn't improvise particularly well.

Hopper sounded moribund during this commentary, he must have been very ill or very sedated. I was going to write that this must have been just before he died of cancer, but apparently this was released in 1999, a good 10 years before his demise. I don't think they should have bothered making this commentary with him in that state.
