This was my first introduction to a Ken Russell track, and it's readily apparent, I need to track down the rest of his commentaries. Director Russell is both very wry, yet informative throughout the track. He really does "take the piss" out of moviemaking and actor coddling. However, his humor does not dominate the track. I was fascinated to learn about Scottish folklore, as well as Bram Stoker's influence on Ken. Tired of the numerous pictures and fables devoted to Bats, both he and Stoker decided it was time to devote some storytelling to the "worm," or snake as it were. Ken is quick to point out which technical choices he made while filming directly relate to the snake as a thematic element. His camera literally "slithers," as action proceeds one direction, only to return in the opposite one, while propelling the story forward. This is fun and brilliant stuff. Just don't expect much dishing on Hugh Grant, who apparently "disowns" this appearance. Russell is all about the "worm." 9/10
