Director Tom Shadyac talks about the movie and what it was like to film it. He is not a bad speaker and he does not leave too many big gaps in his commentary, but of course, there is not a lot to say about directing a Jim Carrey comedy, so it's kind of boring.

This was better than I expected. He talks about how he and Carrey decided to take a big risk and go way over the top with his character figuring that they had little to lose at that point in their careers. Shadyac points out that originally the studio wanted someone like Chevy Chase or Rick Moranis but once Carrey came on board he drew upon his stand-up persona in creating Ace. Shadyac waxes on about the nature of comedy but with surprisingly little pretension. He also points out the bits that Carrey improvised in this fun, engaging track.

Tom Shadyac seem to be a bit self-congratulatory on this commentary. If you could see past that though, it was entertaining to listen to some of the things that Jim Carrey would do on the set. It would've been great though had Jim Carrey joined in to confirm or deny Tom's claims of Jim's greatness. All in all, it's a nice look back at a movie that launched the career for a popular director as well as a huge star, but what I'd like to hear is a commentary between both Tom and Jim updated to this day on Ace Ventura.
