I am shocked to be the first to review this 20 year old film commentary. Especially because it is actually really good.
Being a writer director, you will learn more about the writing than you do the directing here. He will say over and over again that it was absolutely essential to him that he captured perfectly what it was like to be a soldier. He speaks with reverence for the entire commentary. I can see why Gibson likes using him
He also focuses on each actor, how well they captured what the real life people that they were playing, and he met. He honors, almost worships, the real soldiers, maybe even the Vietnamese as well.
He points out how he knows how horrific some of the things we see, the injuries we see, but says they are absolutely accurate, and feels it is necessary to let the audience see what the soldiers saw.
At one moment he points out a pre-Mad Men John Hamm as someone he is sure will be a big star some day.
An interesting moment is when he talks about how the real officer on the set talking about how he led, inspired him to lead his film set the same way.
Also, there are about 20 minutes of deleted scenes, with his commentary at well.
