Strong movie and a strong commentary from the dependable William Friedkin.

Friedkin takes on a journey in this commentary. (Not unlike how the movie takes us on a journey through the minds of insane people.) He talks about the origins of this film, from stage to screen. How he knew when to use closeups, montages, and some fancy camera work, all that would not be possible in a play.
He talks about some of his previous films, and how they did not work well, but what he learned from them was how to make this one work. He brings up how impressed he is with the actors, and Michael Shannon who was mostly unknown, really does own this role.
He is a little muted and calm, during some of the more insane moments of the film, which is tough to watch in places even with the commentary all we can hear. But excited during some of the quieter moments pointing out something fortuitous that happened behind the scene.
I am not going to say he helps you understand the film any better. And if the film messes you up, his commentary will not bring you back to sanity. But still, I am giving this an easy 9 out of 10.
